Why does the speed of your website matter?

What is website speed?

What we are talking about here is the time that it takes your website to load sufficiently for a user to interact with it.

Speed or load time is an essential consideration for any website owner as it has such a significant effect on the effectiveness of the website.

Why is website speed so important

Everything is fast in the modern world, from wanting the latest model iPhone and wanting it NOW to making a tedious journey quicker, speed can take many guises.

Website speed influences user behaviour on your website. In a recent study it was found that about half of web users expect a site to load in 2 seconds or less. If it isn’t loaded within 3 seconds, those users tend to abandon the site. For online store owners an even more alarming statistic is that 64% of shoppers who are dissatisfied with an online store’s experience & loading time will take their business elsewhere. These are just two examples of user behaviour and the way users react to slower sites, this means you’re not only losing your current visitors and decreasing conversion rates, but you run the risk of continuing to do so if nothing is done about the problem.

A slow website will also have an effect on your search ranking with Google and other major search engines. Google especially prioritises faster sites over slower ones, so not only could a slow website affect your users it will also affect how many users you could potentially have.

If you have a responsive website then the load time is even more of a concern, not only because it has to compete against apps loaded to the device in terms of speed but on slow connections your website may not even load at all, where a faster, better optimised website would.

What are the causes of a slow website

The causes of a slow website can be down to many factors, from a slow server to unoptimised images or even making too many HTTP requests (these pull assets to your pages). Most of the causes of slow loading are down to the way the site has been developed, when it was developed (technology moves fast so quicker sites tend to be those that have been recently developed by a responsible development team), and by whom it was developed.

Most website owners don’t understand the technical jargon concerned, and as a result dont know how to communicate their concerns to developers, so how do you as a website owner find the best solution for your site?
