Usability

The most important consideration for any digital project, why not get an expert on board?

Usability Demystified

On the Web, Usability is a necessary condition for survival. If a website is difficult to use, people leave. If the homepage fails to clearly state what a company offers and what users can do on the site, people leave. If users get lost on a website, they leave. If a website's information is hard to read or doesn't answer users' key questions, they leave. Note a pattern here? There's no such thing as a user reading a website manual or otherwise spending much time trying to figure out an interface. There are plenty of other websites available; leaving is the first line of defense when users encounter a difficulty.

User Testing

User Centric Design

All too often, projects are undertaken with a focus on business goals, the latest features, and the technological capabilities of hardware or software tools available. All of these approaches to interface design ignore the most important part of the process – the end user.

User Centric Design is the process of designing a website’s or application’s user interface, from the perspective of how it will be understood and used by a human user.

Users of all technical ability, from the least to the most able have a similar response to frustration, they go elsewhere. To ensure your project is successful it's important to provide the right experience for your users.

Factors that influence User Experience

In order to provide a meaningful and valuable user experience, information must be.

  • Useful: Your content should be original and fulfill a need
  • Usable: Site must be easy to use
  • Desirable: Image, identity, brand, and other design elements are used to evoke emotion and appreciation
  • Findable: Content needs to be navigable and locatable onsite and offsite
  • Accessible: Content needs to be accessible to people with disabilities
  • Credible: Users must trust and believe what you tell them

Analysis Paralysis

Maybe you’ve heard of a phenomenon called choice or analysis paralysis. In brief, it’s a situation where a user can’t make a decision because he’s faced with too many choices that they end up paralyzing them. Hence, choice paralysis.

Users can quickly find themselves is the state of over-analyzing (or over-thinking) a situation so that a decision or action is never taken. Analytics data may be able inform you of these pain points after release, however we can provide a well constructed interface that performs for all technical levels of users.

Usability Testing

An interface’s level of usability can be measured by inviting intended users of the system to participate in a usability testing session. During a usability test session, a user is given a series of tasks to complete by using the interface in question, without any interferance from the researcher. The researcher records user behaviors, emotional reactions, and the user’s performance as the he attempts to accomplish each task.

We can assist with complex levels of usability testing such as eyeball tracking to produce heatmaps of an interface, to the most simple testing of an interface with sourced participants or members of your own company. Usability testing can be the last line of defence you have against releasing a project that simply doesn't work for end users.
